5th WRONG Biennale - Pavillion 42 WEB

Motifs of longing and desire are deeply rooted in the history of art, as well as in our everyday lives. Be it the romantic landscape paintings of Caspar David Friedrich or well-known commercialized image worlds from media and advertising landscapes, which are supposed to evoke a desire for the advertised (emotional) goods in the viewer. Longings usually stand for desirable states that seem distant or unattainable at the moment of acute longing. The multitude of longings can, for example, be about the desire to be in a different place, to be at a different point in life, to develop oneself further, to optimize oneself, etc. The focus is on the change of the own now-state, towards a more attractive or better variant of this state.
According to sociologist Hartmut Rosa, desire is always directed toward something unavailable: we desire what we don't have, or can't quite control. The basic structure of desire and longing seems to be such that it is driven by the desire to make available something (still) unattainable. It can also be an expression of a situation that is considered to be deficient or insufficient. Thus, individuals' feelings of longing also reflect the growth paradigm to which modern societies are subject - this also relates to the internalization of the assumption that longings can be satisfied through consumption.
In the complex theme of longing, we also recognize a creative potential that enables us to understand longing as a flexible phenomenon whose horizon can be expanded, shifts through artistic engagement and is always in flux. The assumption of the present and the self as something unfinished opens speculative perspectives and points beyond the individual, towards a social level.
